She Always Knew: The Story Behind Our Laura Palmer Perfume

By Courtney, Founder of The Great Northern Candle Co.

Laura launched in her current form in September 2023, after years of evolving from the original single-note black cherry version I first blended in 2015. I thought I would share a little more about this remarkable fragrance today on the blog.

A Character Who Never Left Me

There's a scene early in Twin Peaks where Agent Cooper bites into a slice of cherry pie at the Double R Diner and sighs like the world just got a little more beautiful. If you know Twin Peaks, you know that moment isn't just about pie; it's about the way the show wraps sweetness and darkness together so tightly you can't separate them. That's Laura Palmer. That's always been Laura Palmer.

I’ve been haunted by Laura Palmer since I was a freshly minted 13-year-old, sitting too close to the television in 1990. Long before I ever dreamed of blending fragrances here in Oregon, her story rewired my brain. She was radiant and broken, beloved and unknowable—the kind of ghost that settles into the back of your mind and refuses to leave once the credits roll. When I founded The Great Northern Candle Co. in 2015, it wasn't just a business move; it was a way to finally answer a decades-old call. I knew I had to make something for her. Not just about her, but for her. I wanted a fragrance that could hold her contradictions the way our Pacific Northwest woods hold the fog: quietly, deeply, and without ever needing an answer.

That fragrance is Laura. It’s been our #1 bestseller ever since, carrying her mystery into homes far beyond the Pacific Northwest.

What Laura Palmer Means to This Brand

The Great Northern Candle Co. is rooted in Twin Peaks. The name itself is a nod to the iconic Great Northern Hotel, and our whole aesthetic draws from the Douglas firs, the diner booths, the red curtains, and that particular quality of Pacific Northwest light that feels both golden and melancholy at the same time.

But Laura Palmer is the heart of it. She's the mystery that drives everything in the show, and she's the mystery that drives this perfume. What I wanted to capture wasn't tragedy. It's duality. The Laura who brought everyone joy, who danced and laughed and handed out meals to the elderly. And the Laura who walked alone through the woods at night, carrying something enormous and private and unspoken. Like so many of us do in certain chapters of our lives.

Our signature Twin Peaks inspired fragrance had to hold both of those Lauras. I didn't want something that smelled simply "dark" or simply "sweet." I wanted the tension between them.

Of course, that hasn't stopped the internet from weighing in with its own olfactory theories. I’ve seen the comments—people asking if she smells like cigarettes and bad decisions, or, my personal favorite, 'decay.' But Laura isn't a punchline or a costume. My perfume is Laura as she lived. She is the duality of Twin Peaks. And as for the purists who insist cherry is strictly Audrey’s territory? To that I say: 'Sure! Create an Audrey perfume that smells of cherry stems! 😉" Though for the record, we do have perfume inspired by Audrey that smells of sass and opulence. Because she too was more than just a brothel bar trick.

How the Scent Captures Laura

Crafting a sour cherry perfume around Laura Palmer felt inevitable the moment I started sketching the concept. Cherry is Twin Peaks - the pie, the lip gloss, the way Sheryl Lee played her as something vivid and just slightly overripe. But raw cherry alone would be too simple, too cheerful. In fact, our original fragrance from 2015 smelled just like black cherry, and I eventually pulled it from the line. I realized Laura deserved so much more than a single note.

Fragrance Notes

Top Notes: Sour Black Cherry + Saffron
The opening is bright and almost startling. Tart, vivid, and inviting, the way Laura could walk into a room and make everyone feel like the sun had just come out. Saffron adds an immediate layer of complexity: golden, slightly medicinal, just a little unsettling. You're drawn in before you fully understand what you're being drawn into.

Heart Notes: Smoldering Woods + Soft Smoke + Spiced Air
This is where the woods come in. The same Douglas firs that surrounded Twin Peaks, the same smoke that curled from Glastonberry Grove. The heart of Laura Perfume is where the sweetness starts to quiet and something deeper, stranger, and more beautiful emerges. Smoldering woods and soft smoke don't announce themselves. They drift in from below, the way dread drifts into a David Lynch scene.

Base Notes: Vanilla Suede + Skin Musk + Roasted Warmth
The dry-down is where Laura becomes most intimate. Close to the skin, warm, and impossible to fully place. Vanilla suede softens everything without resolving it. The roasted warmth lingers like an ember, and the skin musk makes it feel personal, like a secret shared at the last possible moment.

The result, as our product description says, lingers like a secret kept too long: beautiful, unresolved, and quietly magnetic.

Who Is Laura For?

We like to say Laura is for anyone who finds beauty in contrast. But let us be a little more specific:

  • Twin Peaks fans who want to wear the show's atmosphere as a second skin. This one's obviously made for you.

  • Fragrance lovers who love unexpected openings... That sour cherry-and-saffron top note is genuinely unlike most perfumes on the market, and if you're tired of safe florals, it will wake you up.

  • People who run warm and love skin-scent bases; The vanilla suede and musk dry-down is exceptional on warm skin. It becomes almost undetectably yours.

  • Gift buyers looking for something thoughtful and distinctive for the person who's hard to shop for. Especially if they have a thing for film, TV, or Pacific Northwest aesthetics.

  • Anyone drawn to fragrance with a story. If you want to know why a perfume smells the way it does, you're our kind of person.

What Our Customers Are Saying

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"I don't even watch Twin Peaks and I'm obsessed."
Marisol T., verified buyer

"My friend recommended this and I was skeptical. A perfume based on a TV show? But the second I sprayed it, I understood. The cherry opening is unlike anything I've smelled before - and definitely not like cough syrup as so many cherry forward perfumes are. This is my new signature scent."

"I cried when I smelled it. I mean that sincerely."
Jen V., verified buyer
"I've been a Twin Peaks fan since 1990. I've bought a lot of TP merch over the years and most of it is cute but surface-level. This perfume gets it. The smokiness in the middle? Yum. The cherry opening? 💯 the Double R. The dry-down is something more beautiful than I expected. Courtney clearly loves what she does and loves Twin Peaks - Not only does it show. You can smell it."

"Wearing it feels like magic made in dreams."
Aimee H., verified buyer
"This scent positively invokes the aura of Laura Palmer. Wearing it feels like magic made in dreams. The mix of sour cherry and woodsmoke is subtle. It’s not a strong smoky scent, but rather a perfect mix of sweetness with undertones of the most perfect summer bonfire. It’s balanced and not overpowering, but lasts all day. Better than I could have imagined."

"Smells so unique and just as you’d imagine. Sits wonderful on the skin.."
Laura L., verified buyer
"Influenced to look into this perfume and then go on to buy it from a creator on tiktok. Smells so unique and just as you’d imagine. Sits wonderful on the skin. Love the name and the inspiration behind the scent. I gravitate to cherry/berry scents and this fits so nicely into my perfume collection. Waited patiently for my bottle only to receive an upgrade in size unexpectedly and a nice note from the company for my purchase. Thank you!"

"I don't even usually like cherry, but I took a chance and love this scent."
Amanda S., verified buyer
"I don't even usually like cherry, but I took a chance and love this scent. The sour cherry is simply addictive. The dry down to smoke is subtle and beautiful. Just a fantastic every day fragrance.."

"This has become my new go-to scent and it is beautiful."
McKaela G., verified buyer
"i got the small tester size of this perfume a few months ago because i was looking for a nice cherry scent that wasn’t ONLY cherry. i absolutely LOVE twin peaks, so when i came across this one, i knew i had to give it a try. this has become my new go-to scent and it is beautiful. i love that, while it still has the definite cherry element, it fades into more of that smokiness throughout the time i wear it!!"

Damn Fine Fragrance

We've always believed that fragrance is storytelling in its most intimate form. You carry it with you. It changes with your body heat, your skin chemistry, the temperature of the air. It's the most personal thing we make, and the one we're most proud of.

Laura Perfume is our bestseller for a reason: it's a Twin Peaks inspired fragrance that works as a perfume in the truest sense, regardless of whether you've ever seen a single frame of the show. But if you have - if you've felt the pull of those woods, if you've wondered what Laura knew, we think you'll recognize something in it.
